KRISTIN FLYNN

Newburgh NY UNITED STATES
I am a visual artist living and working in the Hudson Valley of upstate New York. I hold a BFA from Parsons School of Design, an A.A.S. from Rochester Institute of Technology, and studied painting at Marylhurst University.

My work has been exhibited in solo exhibitions at Cheryl McGinnis Gallery, Wired Gallery, the Stone Ridge Library, and the Stone Ridge Center for the Arts. I have also participated in group exhibitions at The Painting Center, Margaret Bodell Gallery, Jane Street Gallery, Studio 89, Brick Gallery, Kingston Museum of Contemporary Art, Marist College, and Bard College. My residencies include Vermont Studio Center, Jentel, and the Platte Clove Artist in Residency.

Before returning more fully to painting, I had an extensive career in the fashion industry, primarily as an apparel designer at Nike in Portland, Oregon. I later created and directed the fashion design program at SUNY Ulster Community College, which I led for nine years.

My creative practice is grounded in life practices that sustain me: reading, cycling, hiking through woods and fields, sketching, and observing the changing landscape over time. I am concerned about climate change and the diversity and health of native species. These experiences, along with photographs gathered while out in the woods, become source material for my paintings.

Working primarily in acrylic on paper, I combine direct observation with memory and invention to construct images that explore the relationship between the human body and the natural world. The images reflect my love of native beauty and grief over environmental changes.

I work from a studio on my property, where the rhythms of weather, season, and place remain closely connected to the evolution of the work.
