RIVKA S. KATVAN
New York City NY UNITED STATES
I am a photographer who graduated with a BFA with honors from the School of Visual Arts in 1979. For my thesis, I photographed life backstage on Broadway, a project that continued after graduation and became part of my practice for almost forty years.
While backstage photography became a passion, I have also been drawn to street photography, travel photography, and visual storytelling. My work includes series such as NYC Reflections, which features moody, surreal images of store mannequins reflected in the windows they inhabit, as well as photographs made in Coney Island and other places that have shaped my visual journey. I am also currently collaborating with my husband, Moshe Katvan, a professional photographer and artist, on a project called Artist Portraits.
I carry my camera everywhere, responding to the vignettes, moments, and stories that speak to me. Although my work backstage on Broadway has been an important part of my life, I have never allowed theatre photography to define me as an artist.
My practice is guided by curiosity, instinct, and the belief that my heart and eyes are interchangeable. I am drawn to the vast range of sights, ideas, and encounters that surround me, from the quiet surrealism of city reflections to the lyrical unreality of people moving through public spaces.
I do not want to be confined to one subject matter. Instead, I follow what speaks to me in the moment, allowing each journey, place, and encounter to shape the images I make.
