RIVKA S. KATVAN
New York City NY UNITED STATES
My practice is guided by curiosity, instinct, and the belief that my heart and eyes are interchangeable. I am drawn to the vast range of sights, ideas, and encounters that surround me, from the quiet surrealism of city reflections to the lyrical unreality of people moving through public spaces. I do not want to be confined to one subject matter. Instead, I follow what speaks to me in the moment, allowing each journey, place, and encounter to shape the images I make.
Rivka S. Katvan is a photographer and visual storyteller who earned her BFA with honors from the School of Visual Arts in 1979. For her thesis, she documented life backstage on Broadway, beginning a body of work that continued for nearly forty years. Her photographs examine the spaces beyond public performance, recording the labor, relationships, and passing moments that form the private life of the theatre.
While backstage photography holds an important place within Rivka’s practice, her work also encompasses street and travel photography. Carrying her camera wherever she goes, she responds to gestures, encounters, and scenes that suggest a larger narrative. Rivka is currently collaborating with her husband, photographer and artist Moshe Katvan, on Artist Portraits, a project examining the individuals behind creative practices. Across her bodies of work, she approaches photography as a method of sustained observation without allowing any single subject or genre to define her artistic identity.
