Drawing from my Puerto Rican and Filipina identity, as well as personal and inherited histories, I reimagine women as witnesses, storytellers, and authors of their own narratives. These figures exist with presence and intention, holding space rather than occupying it passively. They challenge the viewer to question the stories that have been fed about women that have been victimized, villainized or blamed when not fitting in their designated box.
La Gran Villana was created as a response to the narrative that seems to accompany women that own their space and all that entails. Their sensuality, intelligence, defiance and beauty. She does not shrink at the eyes of the viewer but rather, she dares them to see her.
