CYNTHIA KARALLA - Echoing in the Body (2011)
Hahnemühle Photo Rag Pearl — with a matte coating, 40H x 60W in (101.5H x 152.5W cm), edition 1 of 7
I have always believed in the profound weight of history. Without a deep knowledge of the past, we risk wandering blindly in an empty black hole, disconnected from the foundations of human thought. But when we look back, history opens up a grand world populated by the brilliant minds who came before us — giving us a map to drive purposefully into the future from exactly where they left off. Drawn to the raw, lensless beauty of early photographic processes, I chose to deconstruct the optical mechanics of the camera obscura. Using a modern digital Nikon D800E, I replaced the traditional lens with custom-built camera body caps, drilling not one, but multiple pinholes directly into the plastic. By introducing a multi-pinhole array, I collapse time and space into a single frame. Each puncture views the subject from a slightly offset vantage point, scattering the light to create an authentic, camera-native cubist image. The resulting photographs shatter singular Renaissance perspective, mirroring the multi-dimensional facets of Picasso and the deep compositions of the masters. Through this process of deliberate fragmentation, the figures emerge from dark, vignetted voids into a dance of light and shadow — proving that by reassembling the tools of our past, we can forge a completely new way of looking at our present.
