SHARON HARRIS - Frontier (2019)
pinhole photograph, 14H x 11W in (35.5H x 28W cm)
The portrayal of the female figure in various locations remains a constant theme in my work. The locations I seek to photograph include structures that can be transformed through the pinhole camera. Since I am never quite sure how a pinhole camera will bend reality, I often return to the same places numerous times. Delving deeply into a particular subject or space confirms that there are limitless variations one can create through this art form. I sometimes transform a location through staging adding an aspect of mythology, symbolism, and storytelling to the imagery. I use props in much the same way and in collaboration with models we hope to bring forth new possibilities. The long exposures, the stillness of the model, the anticipation of what I have captured hangs in the air. Through the pinhole the subject can reside in her own reality. She dwells within the darkened edges of a vignette. Since there is something unknowable you are asked to lean in. The viewer arrives, draws back the curtain revealing a world that can only be created through the use of a pinhole camera.
