Join photographer, educator, author, and authority on alternative photographic processes Jill Enfield for a hands-on workshop exploring the camera obscura and the foundations of photography inside the Pictorial Foundation’s Walk-in Camera Obscura.
Jill has spent decades teaching historical and alternative photographic processes and leads workshops and lectures internationally. Her knowledge of these processes will guide participants through the principles that underpin photographic image-making.
Participants will begin inside the Camera Obscura, observing how light travels through an aperture to form an image. Jill will then guide participants in making exposures on black-and-white photographic paper, using different pinhole apertures and lenses to examine how changes in aperture and optics affect the resulting image.
The workshop will also introduce pinhole photography through a selection of handmade cameras. Participants will learn how cameras can be constructed from everyday materials and how these principles can be explored without specialised equipment.
Participants will process their black-and-white photographic paper negatives in the darkroom before scanning the negatives and producing digital prints. The process connects early photographic methods with digital technology, following the image from light entering an aperture through to a finished print.
The workshop is designed for participants at any level of photographic experience and provides an opportunity to experiment with the principles of image-making while understanding the relationship between historical photographic processes and contemporary practice.
