KIERA STUART
Brooklyn NY UNITED STATES
I aspire to offer viewers a dreamscape — a space for introspection on fragility, vulnerability
and the interconnected nature of our existence.
I am a queer feminist contemporary artist raised in rural Long Island, New York, where my parents’ teachings on Native cultures, environmental justice, and living in harmony with the earth shaped my worldview. I studied anatomical drawing and fine art at the Fashion Institute of Technology and The Art Students League before earning my BFA in Studio Art from Hunter College in 2018 and my MFA from Brooklyn College in 2022, where my practice deepened through feminist studies, ecofeminism, and feminist art. Based in Bushwick, Brooklyn, I maintain an active studio practice that explores vulnerability and the parallels between the female body and the natural world while remaining engaged with the New York City art scene.
Studio practice begins with journaling and automatic drawing; the drawings use organic repetitive lines inspired by wood grain patterns. I'm fascinated by how these natural patterns are similar to muscle structures and biological forms in the body, as well as our complex relationship to trees. After loose sketching, I use my body to create reference photos with selfie camera mode. Acting as the model and artist allows new ways to explore the body as expression. I then explore how different expressions can interact with each other and nature.
My art practice explores relationship dynamics, vulnerability and the connection between the body and nature. I create surreal figurative oil paintings, sculptures and ink drawings as psychological maps to process and investigate the interconnectedness of ourselves and nature.
