Pictorial Foundation proudly opens its doors for the very first time with Foundations of Practice, an exhibition highlighting artists whose work is grounded in research, experimentation, and process. We invite artists to explore how inquiry can both shape work and be work; a blurring between conception, installation, and all of the steps in between. Studio mess, research data, or notebook markings are embodiments of thinking and doing. Translated into a context of display, we can encounter the transient gestures of playing and learning in a new light. We aim to give visibility to everything that goes into the process of making—the experiments, discoveries, stumbles and failures. Formal or informal, finished or just starting, we encouraged artists to share the curiosities that drive what they do.

Rising over nine feet, Skyborn is a slender plaster presence built around a steel core. Its open-armed ascent holds stillness and tension, anchored to the earth while reaching toward the sky. Neither fully figurative nor abstract, the sculpture occupies a threshold between body and aspiration, appearing less as a figure than as a presence that has borrowed one. Its scale and posture create a physical encounter between viewer and object, opening a dialogue about ambition, vulnerability, persistence, and the gravitational pull of lived experience.

Island Hopping documents conversations with ChatGPT used to develop a February 2026 installation at Kent Library in Putnam County, New York. Structured as a library card catalog, the work presents geographic information about Caribbean nations and territories, including maps, Dewey Decimal classifications, and grid coordinates. Printed PDFs of the conversations and photographs of the installation form the project’s archive. Reflecting the Caribbean’s Spanish-speaking communities, the documents are presented in both English and Spanish.
