MARIEKEN COCHIUS
Wappingers Falls NY UNITED STATES
My work delves into the unseen forces of nature — movement, transformation, and the delicate balance between order and disorder. Through these works I challenge the viewer to explore the intersection of industrial materials and organic forms, blurring the boundaries between man-made and naturally occurring beauty.
I use a welder in ways it is not specifically intended to. Starting with a steel sheet, I “draw” with a MIG welder, and build up reliefs as I go. Nerve or root like systems and many different marks and textures grow together. When welding, fragments of wire, splatter, and small pieces of metal fall to the floor. Rather than discarding this material, I collect it with a magnet and sort it roughly by size. I then make work using these remnants. On each panel, I strew and weld the collected fragments directly onto the surface, adding metal shapes on stems, with each panel realized at a different scale.
