PHILIP DEMARTINO
Kingston NY UNITED STATES
By creating an alter-ego/stand-in that I refer to as WHEREMYEYESLAND I am attempting to make sense of the absurdities that I see all around us. Our lives are full of contradictions, and mine is no exception. I like simple things, yet I relish excess. Making art is my attempt at making sense of these contradictions. Using found materials in my collages and photographs is important to me, it affords me the belief that I’m not contributing to the clutter of our lives.
Through this process, stories emerge that question how present-day society arrived at this moment and where it may be headed. My work often feels like reportage from the periphery, grounded in the belief that truth is found in spaces most frequently overlooked. As I often say, “Where my eyes land, my mind follows; where my mind goes, my energy flows.”
Photographs are made while walking various urban neighborhoods. I usually alter the original pictures by juxtaposing my ‘wheremyeyesland’ imagery over the photos. Often my 'wheremyeyesland' sticker is slapped in the scene before making the original photograph. I like to make diptychs or triptychs to either create contrast, or continuity. I know I have landed on something interesting if I am seeing a sentence starter to an open-ended story.
