PAOLA POMARICO

New York City UNITED STATES
I am a New York City–based artist whose transdisciplinary practice explores the social agency and animacy of infrastructure. Framing myself as a mother of tools available for public use, I explore the community tool closet as a platform to advocate deeper recognition for my children’s lively character, cultivated through their embodied performance of labor shared with me and others. Through site-specific interventions, I employ high-visibility color to draw attention to civic surfaces, amplifying the affective potency of infrastructure’s stressful servitude and fostering empathy for the vibrant ontologies of nonhuman things.

Walking down a sidewalk looking at its surface beneath my feet, I witness cracks, voids and pits — scars indexing the pavement’s experience of decay and finitude. High-visibility color draws attention to civic surfaces. Restoring the sidewalk with bright pink patchwork, I flag the scars of its enduring servitude. My vibrant maintenance amplifies the affective potency of its stress and strain; in solidaric attention, we can reciprocate the care of its laboring performance. Yet maintenance is never permanent, as my deposits of color scatter, track, leak, and bleed. In my high-visibility patchwork’s failure to repair, infrastructure cries in the vulnerability of collapse. That reciprocal, messy, embodied care never pauses.
