Foundations of Practice began as a series of conversations about how artists work, think, and stay with their practice over time. Last Saturday night, those conversations took physical form as the exhibition opened at the Pictorial Foundation's new Artspace in Newburgh, New York with members of the local community braving the cold to make the evening a generous and memorable one.

The opening marked one moment of gathering, but the exhibition itself has always been shaped by a much wider community. To the artists and supporters who could not be in New York for the opening, please know that your presence is deeply felt. Your participation, encouragement, and trust are also an essential part of this exhibition and of the community that continues to grow around it.

Each contribution reflects a distinct approach to making and thinking, and together they form a collective reflection on what it means to commit to practice. The exhibition was not built around a single aesthetic or theme, but around the ways artists develop work over time, test ideas, and remain in conversation with their materials, questions, and contexts.
Putting Foundations of Practice together was a collaborative process from start to finish. It required openness, care, and a willingness to think beyond familiar exhibition structures. We are grateful to the artists for their generosity, their curiosity, and their readiness to engage thoughtfully with one another and with us.

It was a meaningful beginning, and we are excited about what comes next. We look forward to continuing these conversations through future exhibitions, programs, and shared moments with our community. The Artspace will be open every Thursday to Sunday.
Big love!
Karen and Melanie
